Successful Start For The Islands New Monitoring System!
We are glad to hear that numerous tourists are reporting scams on Phu Quoc via the new Phu Quoc App, however this one takes the cake as it affects the islands image, Vietnam & International Law, and small business who are building an brand honestly, Since 2016 we have been reporting that the Phu Quoc shop “Buddy Boutique” has been selling counterfeit products – verified by the major brands. In 2017, Buddy Boutique removed infringing images from their Facebook page. In early 2018, tourists visited the shop and reported seeing numerous counterfeit products with “Buddy Boutique” tags (lots of pics shared via social media). Now just before the 1st Phu Quoc Business Networking Event of 2018, their Facebook page has suddenly been removed, either by authorities, or by the owner to hide this from the general public and/or future clients.
Here is the shocking reveal, kind of like Phu Quoc’s version of the USA/Russia Scandal:
“Buddy Boutique” = “Visit Phu Quoc” (those guides) = “Buddy Ice Cream” = “Official Tourist Information Center” = “Phu Quoc Cham”. It is the same expat (yes the one who copied our in depth digital map last year… created by young locals .. and has yet to apologize or give recognition).
1) The Vietnamese government has confirmed that Buddy Ice Cream is not, nor ever was, the islands official tourist information center (obviously) contrary to the ads you will see in their *own* guide (it is their guide after all…)
2) The sale and distribution of counterfeit products is ILLEGAL in Vietnam. They are not young kids, but rather a western educated old expat and should know better! There is no *mulligan* on this mate. Past behavior is an indicator of future behavior.
3) In Asia, the counterfeit products industry is tightly linked with child labor, sex trafficking, among other things. It is also hurts brands and consumers, and is extremely unethical. Everyone who lives or has lived in Asia knows this.
PHU QUOC’S IMAGE & INTEGRITY
With billions already invested in Phu Quoc, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang and other stakeholders must act swiftly to protect the islands image or be seen as a destination that is lawless and one where greed outweighs business ethics. We live in a world of social media policing. The crowd will point out the scams – like it has with Buddy Boutique. The Phu Quoc 2030 Strategic Plan must incorporate methods for protecting tourists and local businesses.
Lets hope that their New Years starts on TET and that their New Year resolution is to be ethical, to stop slandering competitors and stealing ideas, be original, and to do no harm to tourists, nature, community, and the brand image of Phu Quoc.
